Based on School Context and Values:
The Bible says to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind. However, the terms "heart" and "mind" are not meant to be understood as separate categories, but rather as overlapping concepts that mean "the whole of us". In Psychology, most psychologists believe that the mind is part of the brain. This is due to advances in brain research that have demonstrated the power of the brain over consciousness.
At St. Ambrose College, we have designed a Psychology A-Level curriculum that fosters curiosity and critical thinking about human behaviour and mental processes. Our students are supported in developing a deep understanding of psychological theories and concepts, equipping them with the skills to analyse complex issues and make informed decisions. We emphasize the importance of real-world applications of psychology, encouraging students to explore its relevance in various contexts, including mental health, education, and social issues.
We guide students to consider the ethical implications inherent in psychological research and practice, fostering a sense of responsibility and integrity. “The dignity of the human person is rooted in his or her creation in the image and likeness of God” (Catechism of the Catholic Church). This perspective inspires our approach to teaching, promoting respect and empathy in understanding diverse human experiences.
We challenge students to think independently and engage in collaborative discussions, promoting a culture of exploration and inquiry. Independent learning is encouraged, with students taking responsibility for their educational journey in preparation for further study or careers in psychology and related fields.
We aim to inspire a love for learning, helping students achieve their highest potential while developing the resilience and skills necessary for their future endeavours. Psychology teaching at St. Ambrose College emphasises the intricacies of human behaviour, motivating students to delve deeper into the subject and its impact on society.
